On my way back from a rather soggy Canary Wharf this lunchtime, I happened to look properly at the new priority stickers currently emblazoned across the TfL network;

“Priority seat for people who are pregnant, disabled
or less able to stand”
… following the subtext of the sign; it would seem that having a child is now classed as a disability!
Good ol’ TfL!

What do you suggest a politically correct image for someone who is ‘disabled’ would be? 😉

If we wanna get serious on this; I would say that it is time for a new sign other than the usual chap in the wheelchair as the term ‘disability’ can be applied to so many other conditions/ailments.
It seems that TfL have just thrown their hands up in the air and shrugged their shoulders when coming up with this sign, adding in another ‘unable to stand’ person as opposed to a pictogram specifically representing disability, most likely due to a lack of a suitable sign. I should probably add that I am not inferring that TfL have been careless or callous with Disability rights and whatnot.
Personally, I’d have rather have seen them have just two pictograms as the unable to stand person could also be inferred as a person with a disability (dependant on and mindful of that person’s viewpoint on their situation of course). By including the third pictogram, you are labeling each of the charcters as fitting into one of the situations and given the current selection you are, by default, excluding the disabled person from the sticker in favour of pushing the idea of mothers (which was why the new stickers were created in the first place).
My opinion – nothing more, nothing less 🙂

Hah! Nice. 😀 You gotta love public transport.
I think a woman just holding a baby in her arms is gonna be a rare occurrence – they usually have prams or those backpack-style things. I do think it’s probably a bit extreme – in the future the sign is going to need to extend half way along the carriage at this rate.
Hi, nice blog btw. 🙂
