A few people over the last few months have questioned why I have adverts on my site, and I just wanted to acknowledge this query directly on my site! 🙂
WordPress.com insist on putting what they call ‘discreet’ adverts from time to time on everybody’s posts in order to keep their site as free. They’re not anything to do with me, I find them unsightly too – and, in fact, have turned down WordPress’ offer to allow me to customise and monetize my site several times!
Fortunately, I don’t see them too much from day-to-day on my own site owing to my status as ‘owner’, but on the few occasions that I have logged out and seen them, I am really not a fan, and would love to get rid of them.
All that said, http://garidavies.me.uk is a site that (and I’m totally not whinging/complaining) I pay for completely out of my own pocket, and devote a tonne of time to. It already costs me a fair bit each year in domain fees, and ‘upgrades’ for custom domain mapping, space upgrades etc (plus other fees relating to shows I go to see etc), and so I’ve really drawn the line at enhancements that would be lovely, but don’t actually do too much harm.
By all means, if a group of people want to club a small amount each together and send me the princely sum of £20 to clear the adverts completely for a year, I’d happily accept it! It may not sound like much, but it really starts to add up when you’ve been running a site for four years without monetizing it to support it – had I done it from the start, that would have been £80 already, and I’ve just sorted this domain for the next 8 years!
If it is bothering you, and adblockers in your browser aren’t stripping them away, please do let me know, and I may look to reconsider, but can’t guarantee anything – after all, I am very proud of my website, and of all you lovely people who continue to visit! 😀
Here’s a really big advert… just for effect 😛
