Now, I have to say that in the past I have not championed the upcoming West End show, Wizard of Oz, one tiny bit. I don’t like the idea of trying to revive it in the usual 18 month flash-in–pan way that these reality shows tend to produce, and I dislike the idea of there being a lot of new songs written for the show. All that is coupled with the fact that although many people have tried, not one stage production of Wizard of Oz has ever been successful.
All that said, I caught the preview for Wizard of Oz on this year’s Royal Variety Performance and have to say that I was pleasantly surprised – it wasn’t *too* hideous.
I think it was more the familiarity of the munchkin songs, that made me like elements of the performance, rather than Danielle Hope I’m afraid to say. Although I championed her in the TV shows, I still don’t think that she’s vocally up with were people like Connie and Jodie to be honest – perhaps not quite what this role demands vocally, but if you’re going to sing Judy on the biggest stage in London, then you’ve gotta be able to back it up!
Although End Of The Rainbow may have closed by the time Wizard of Oz opens, it seems that if you are looking for the best performance of the song Somewhere Over The Rainbow in the West End, Tracie Bennett in End Of The Rainbow absolutely triumphs hands down!
