Exciting news this week from the world of musical theatre – it has been announced (well…. a badly kept rumour has been confirmed!) that the legendary Judy Cramer (she of ‘I put Mamma Mia together and earnt millions’ fame) is to create an official Spice Girls musical! The working title of the piece is currently ‘Viva Forever’.
With Cramer having the global rights to produce a Spice Girls musical, and backing from Simon Fuller’s record label, she is pretty much guaranteed many more millions to add to her pot. You can see the paint-by-numbers logic… ABBA are huge, Spice Girls were huge… one format fits all! Will it last forever? No, of course not, but I bet it’s going to be one of the best things to hit the stage in the year that it opens!
I think that this could also be especially exciting for the Far Eastern musical theatre market in particular, who I think will really take to this and support it – leading to additional future productions and theatre development for them.
Of course, no casting has yet been announced, however this blogger for one wouldn’t be surprised to see the Spice Girls themselves cropping up… it’s not as if they’re all busy these days, and one of them (Mel C) is currently in the West End already! (appearing in Blood Brothers).
The musical itself won’t see the blistering stage lights for another two to three years, however these will soon whizz by and so you can forget the 2012 Olympics… 2012 could well be the year of the Spice! 😀
(isn’t this just the most random duet… ever?!)
