The Frantastics feat Richard O’Brien – 1 Oct 2010

Last night, I went to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern with Karl as we’d heard that Rocky Horror Picture Show creator, and Crystal Maze legend, Richard O’Brien was going to be performing a few songs as a regular guest member of rocky country outfit ‘The Frantastics‘. There wasn’t really much debate about it – as soon as Karl got here, I mentioned the show to him, and we knew that we *had* to be there! 😀

T’was our first time in the RVT and I loved how Northern it felt – it totally was like New York, New York (in Manchester) if you moved it 176 miles south heh. First Friday of every month is ‘SPEEDWAGON’ – which is a night of 80s classics and power ballads – totally, totally, totally right up my street! (My voice is hoarse from singing along to Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf and other such greats!).

I have to admit that we were a little mean to the band when they first came on; I dubbed them ‘Collection Point C’ as they did all look a little like they worked at Argos heh! (in a nice, down to Earth way, of course). They played some absolutely stonking covers of classics such as Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’, and Elvis’ Suspicious Minds, and they really got the crowd up and dancing.

Surreal moment of the night was when I turned around and Richard O’Brien was passing within inches of Karl and I , on his way to the bathroom. The man is a legend, and it was fab to see him so close!!

Richard took to the stage around 00:45 and by then we were all up for a good boogie – he covered a few songs (very well), and even got out his old harmonica (making this blogger squeal and causing him to hark back to the good ol’ days of Crystal Maze!!). Of course, the Time Warp was done, and sounded phenomenal live! Karl and I knew the dance routine (of course!) and we had quite a few people watching us, including Richard himself I noticed. Big wow! 😀

When we left around 01:30, we managed to fall into line with Richard as he was leaving, but alas we didn’t want to trouble him for an autograph/hug and let him slip away (after a bit of legal/mild drunken stalking heh). Really wish we had now!

All in all, a really really fantastic night, and for a fiver, what more could you ever want?! We even got a free bandana! (causing Karl and I to check further into the colours of the hanky code whilst at he bar… perhaps we totally should have done this BEFORE we made our selection, which we actually based on the pretty colours and our outfits heh).

I took a few pictures of the evening, if you click on them, you’ll be able to enlarge them if you so wish.

Caption comment award has to go to @Jon75 on twitter for one of the Richard pictures: “Is that a fan above him? I hope he shouted “WILL YOU START THE FAN, PLEASE!!” at some point during the evening! – LOL!!! 😀
