The Spiderwick Chronicles

This evening I decided to be brave and headed down, south of the river, to go to Kingston-Upon-Thames to see a film with Stu. It takes a lot to get me south of the river, let alone to Zone 6, so Mr Stu must be doing something right!!! hehe :oP

I did have some freebies to a preview of In Bruges, however due to my misunderstanding of how my annual travelcard/oyster would work on South Western trains, I ended up being slightly delayed and thus we would have missed the start of the film. Therefore, when I met up with Stu we went for a walk along the Thames and had a good chin-wag before deciding to head back to the Odeon cinema and decided to see my suggestion of The Spiderwick Chronicles (on the premise that there was nothing else decent on – plus I wanted to see this anyway hehe!).

I subscribe to the view that you can’t usually go too wrong with a movie aimed at primarily at older kids as you only really have four production houses; Dreamworks, Pixar, Disney and Nickelodeon, and so unlike with ‘adult’ films where anyone with a camera can make a film and it could easily be hit and miss, the quality and care that goes into the production of a film from one of these four (in this case Nickelodeon) is usually a guaranteed cert.

I must say, I absolutely LOVED this film! It’s a fantasy genre film that (unusually!) doesn’t seem to have too many plot holes in it; some good CGI efffects; not too many cheesy lines/actors playing to the camera and, although the plot sometimes leaves you thinking ‘oh, is that it’ [such as the final battle], it doesn’t fail to be consistant and relevant.

I was even rather sniffly at the end I am hesitant to add hehe!

Fantastic music score from James Horner [Titanic] and a stong cast, including Freddie Highmore [Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – 2005], Mary-Louise Parker, and my personal favourite, Joan Plowright.

Stu said that he enjoyed it too – huzzah! \o/

One thing I noticed today whilst on the way to Kingston, how fast the trains that aren’t stopping at certain stations whizz through them! We’re talking like full speed! Reminds me of when my sister and I were kids and we always used to go up to our local railway station (which only had like one stopping train a day) to go and watch the trains and get that buzz when they whizz past you at top speed! Ahhh, those were the days!

Just home now and about to catch up on The Apprentice. I have battenburg cake and a toffee yoghurt to keep me company; so really looking forward to it!

GO AND SEE THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES!!!!

Thanks for reading! xx
