Many people will know that I am someone who has a huge appreciation for music, and that it’s rare for me not to actually have music around me.
And, whilst I absolutely adore my musical theatre stuff, I equally love my 70s and 80s rock music (and it was actually this genre of songs that were very prominent in my teenage years, and these that I can link a lot of memories to).
This album was a 1995 compilation by Virgin Records, back when every other day there seemed to be another one of these The Greatest in the World…. Ever! albums released.
All of these songs from the original compilation album are classics:
1. Kind Of Magic – Queen |
2. Girl Like You – Collins, Edwyn |
3. Over My Shoulder – Mike & The Mechanics |
4. Stuck In The Middle With You – Stealer’s Wheel |
5. Don’t Stop – Fleetwood Mac |
6. Heaven Is A Place On Earth – Carlisle, Belinda |
7. Dignity – Deacon Blue |
8. Road To Hell (2) – Rea, Chris |
9. I Wish It Would Rain Down – Collins, Phil |
10. Romeo And Juliet – Dire Straits |
11. Don’t Dream It’s Over – Crowded House |
12. Waiting For A Girl Like You – Foreigner |
13. I’ll Stand By You – Pretenders |
14. Show Me Heaven – McKee, Maria |
15. Eternal Flame – Bangles |
16. Oh Yeah (On The Radio) – Roxy Music |
17. Drive – Cars |
18. Wind Of Change – Scorpions |
19. To Be With You – Mr. Big |
20. Heaven Help – Kravitz, Lenny |
21. I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That) – Meat Loaf |
22. If I Could Turn Back Time – Cher |
23. Is This Love – Whitesnake |
24. Black Velvet – Myles, Alannah |
25. Days – MacColl, Kirsty |
26. Pure – Lightning Seeds |
27. Mary’s Prayer – Danny Wilson |
28. Valerie – Winwood, Steve |
29. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic – Police |
30. Rosanna – Toto |
31. Keep On Lovin’ You – REO Speedwagon |
32. Hard To Say I’m Sorry – Chicago |

35. Missing You – Waite, John |
36. I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight – Cutting Crew |
37. Kayleigh – Marillion |
38. Babe – Styx |
39. Listen To Your Heart – Roxette |
40. Right Here Waiting – Marx, Richard |
Therefore, for Spotify users, I thought that it’d be great to share with you one of the albums that really started it all off for me, and to give you guys chance to help me update it with your favourite rock ballads too! (yes, it’s collaborative!)
Enjoy, and look forward to listening to your contributions!
After a cursory glance, I reckon no more than 50% of these tracks could really qualify as a rock ballad in the strcit sense of the word.
Don’t stop is a shuffle!!! Kind of magic isnt a ballad, neither is Oh yeah really, nor stuck in the middle with you. Valerie? a ballad? nooooo.
Definite rock ballads here are:
Babe
Is this love
Missing you
To be with you.
Waiting for a girl like you
Lightning seeds, danny wilson marc cohn…ROCK?? no way!
Its interesting how little these record company compilationists know or care about their product or indeed their audience.
Anyway, there’s my two cents worth!

I agree, it is a rather random selection of songs, but all of them are fab!
I don’t think Virgin are even releasing much these days.. especially now the days of the re-hashed “this is the best xxxx EVER!” compilation are over!

Agreed: nothing wrong with the quality of the music. Genres aside, the only tracks I wouldn’t thank you for on there are Meat Loaf and Chris Rea.

Ahh… perhaps I shouldn’t mention that they are two of my favourite artists!! heh.

haha! -the really funny thing is, I know “Mrs Loud” on the Meat Loaf track personally! Her name’s Lorraine Crosby and we sang together once for a mutual friend’s birthday! Just never liked Meaty too much though 🙂 Some Chris Rea I like, I just find road to hell a bit ‘slit your wrists!”

Oooh – good shout! I do rather like her voice.
Meat Loaf used to be great, he’s lost it a bit now though I reckon – I think that’s why I like Chris Rea, Road To Hell (Pt 2) though 😛
